What Do I Need on My Final to Pass?
If you're close to failing a class, the most useful number you can know is the lowest score that still gets you a passing grade. Once you have it, you know whether to study like your semester depends on it, or whether you can breathe a little.
First, find out what "passing" means in your class
There's no single answer. In many classes a D (often 60%) is passing. But a lot of majors require a C (often 70%) or better in core courses, and some classes set their own cutoffs. Check your syllabus for two things:
- The letter grade cutoffs. Is a D 60%, 65%, or something else?
- What grade your program needs. A D might pass the class but still not count toward your major.
The formula
Needed on final = (Passing grade - Current grade × (1 - Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Write the final's weight as a decimal, so 30% becomes 0.30. Your current grade is your average on everything except the final.
Example 1: Just above failing
You have a 62 going into a final worth 30%.
- To finish with a 60: (60 - 62 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (60 - 43.4) ÷ 0.30 = about 55.4
- To finish with a 70: (70 - 43.4) ÷ 0.30 = about 88.7
So passing with a D is very doable, but if your major needs a C, you have real work to do.
Example 2: Already below passing
You have a 55 and the final is worth 40%.
- To finish with a 60: (60 - 55 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (60 - 33) ÷ 0.40 = 67.5
- To finish with a 70: (70 - 33) ÷ 0.40 = 92.5
A heavily weighted final is good news when you're behind. The bigger the final, the more it can pull you up.
Quick lookup: score needed to finish with a 60
| Current grade | Final worth 20% | Final worth 30% | Final worth 40% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 100 | 83.4 | 75 |
| 55 | 80 | 71.7 | 67.5 |
| 60 | 60 | 60 | 60 |
| 65 | 40 | 48.4 | 52.5 |
Quick lookup: score needed to finish with a 70
| Current grade | Final worth 20% | Final worth 30% | Final worth 40% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 | Not possible (130) | Not possible (105) | 92.5 |
| 60 | Not possible (110) | 93.4 | 85 |
| 65 | 90 | 81.7 | 77.5 |
Numbers are rounded up so you never aim a hair too low.
Watch for these rules
- "You must pass the final to pass the course." Some professors require a minimum score on the final itself, no matter your average.
- Exam average minimums. Some classes require your exams to average a certain score before homework counts.
- Ungraded work. If assignments are still out, your current grade will change before the final. Grade Index counts missing scores at your current average until you fill them in.
If passing is mathematically out of reach
Don't just disappear. Talk to your professor early, and look up your school's withdrawal deadline, incomplete policy, and pass/fail options. Each school handles these differently, so check with your advisor before you decide.
